church 1840Welcome to our History pages.

You can use the links on the left to visit a particular section of the timeline, or the links below which take you to a particular 25 year section.

Warning
Nineteenth century religion was very competitive. While there were times when St Paul's cooperated with other Protestant churches which shared the same Evangelical ethos, the attitude to Roman Catholics was particularly antagonistic and relationships between the communities was often tense. The way Roman Catholics are addressed and described by nineteenth century clergy may suprise and shock us, as, in another way, may the social attitudes which were taken for granted at the time.

The timelines are very detailed for some periods, but there are others which are largely undocumented at the moment. The research underlying this site is still going on and more material will be added on a regular basis - it will pay you to revisit the site from time to time! If you have any material which you think might be of use, please get in touch.

On this page you will find links to the several timelines we have created, as well as to additional material we have made available.
